Sea Scout Ship 584 Races
for Gold by Nick Woviotis
On April 24th & 25th 2010, Sea Scouts from
five north east states, ages 14 to 21, traveled to
Toms River, New Jersey to sail in the Sea Scouts
Northeast Regional Sailing Championship
Regatta. With the word that foul weather was
close, many of the teams decided to drop out of
the race, leaving only five determined teams to
compete. On the first day of races, the skies were filled with storm clouds and a southeast breeze
between 14 & 18 knots challenged the racers & their skills. From Sea Scout Ship 584, chartered to
Groton SubVets in Groton CT, Amanda Ballassi of Waterford CT, and Nick Woviotis of
Stonington CT, raced in the event and took first place overall. With Nick Woviotis as the skipper
and Amanda Ballassi as the crew, the two won first place in eight of the ten races that were
stretched out over the two days. With the honor of being named the Northeast Region
Champions, the two received the regional cup and brought it home to their ship, where they will
keep it until the next regional regatta.
With this win, the two will be competing in the Sea Scout International Koch Cup, which will be
held this August at the United States Coast Guard Academy, on the Thames River in New
London CT.
